There was a discussion some time ago on this list about the possibility of a color PXL-equivalent coming to market or colorizing the PXL and such. Until recently, one option was to digitize your color camcorder at 160x120 (or even less if possible, I think the PXL is 120x90) at 15fps. This weekend, I bought a new camcorder that, to my surprise, has a very convincing color-PXL emulation, built-in! I got the Canon ES-6000. One of the optional digital special effects on it is the "MOSAIC". The pixel size of this MOSAIC is somewhat larger than the pixels of the PXL-2000 but they cover the whole screen area. So, the total number of pixels and hence the effective resolution is about the same! Too bad the variable shutter on the Canon cannot be switched to anything less than 1/60 or the emulation would be nearly perfect! And if you want a less "pixilated" effect on the ES-6000, another option is to use the 2x digital "CLOSE-UP" option, which magnifies the picture from the CCD just enough that the individual pixels become visible. I am sure that as digital effects become more and more common, in the computer as well as built into consumer level camcorders, the day that a perfect emulation of the PXL-2000 can be achieved is not very far. <<alex kanaris>> ============================================================================== Alexander Kanaris ___ ___ kanaris@bode.usc.edu Electrical Engineering --- Systems / / /__ / kanaris@thales.usc.edu University of Southern California /__/ ___/ /__ kanaris@aludra.usc.edu Los Angeles, California 90089-2562 kanaris@alumni.caltech.edu ==============================================================================
