PXL Animation?

A friend of mine, who is a talented anime/manga artist, decided that he

wanted to make an anime at home. Nothing large, just maybe some sort of

15-minute deal. I thought it was a good idea, and offered to lend him

my VHS camcorder so he could make it. Then I showed him the wonderful

world of pixelvision, and he wants to use my camera for the project. A

few questions have risen, now.

1. What we're planning isn't animation of a typical sense. What we're

hoping to do is just have each drawing on the screen for about 3 seconds

at a time, so it would be more like the old "Paddington the Bear" kind

of animation, if anybody besides me remembers that. But, we've tried a

few test frames, and there's a lot of video disturbance when the VCR

pauses, then records, then pauses, etc. Is there a better way to do

this?

2. We're having trouble shooting the drawings. Not enough light, the

entire screen is a mess of gray. Try adding more light, and the

screen's a mess of white. Should we try backlighting the drawings?

3. Has anybody else done this or is this completely unfamiliar

territory?

Thanks.
