It is quite possible that the same "stuff" that contaminated your

filter has also contaminated the surface of the lens, and most important

the surface of the CCD chip. I would recommend extreme caution in 

attempting to clean the CCD chip though. The possibility of causing

irreparable damage is definitely there.

No, the distance does not matter, as long as the "filter" is 0 diopters,

i.e. flat.
