That Little IR Filter?

Well I got it apart ok, and finaly "popped" the little greenish

tinted plastic out of the lens compartment, and I'm about to clean

it with Windex- but my question is, before I put it back together-

can anyone tell me why I should put the little piece of plastic

back in? At the website the fellow mentions that some people have

opted to leave it out with no problems arising, and in that it's

kind of funky at this point, and a little bit chipped in the 

removing process, unless there's a good reason 	I'd just as soon 

leave it out.
