Just my curiosity. If the cassette tape head is worn out, it is possible to replace it with another cassette tape head. Azimuth alignment is very critical but it can be done with a screwdriver and a scope. A minidisk recorder is designed to record compressed digital audio. I cannot see why you even mention it. A Hi-8 tape head, the one found in a Hi-8 camcorder or VCR together with all the electronics that go with it CAN be used: Do the baseband video mod to your PXL, then record video on a Hi-8 cassette in a Hi-8 VCR or camcorder.
